January 28, 2010

Through the innovation of new technology, the rate of breast cancer survivors continues to rise. For those who have survived breast cancer, it’s important to protect yourself following the completion of treatments. Covenant Health System Physical Therapist Belinda Alexander works with breast cancer survivors on a regular basis. Alexander said it’s important for breast cancer survivors to implement her suggestions due to an increased risk of getting an infection post-treatment.

  • Monitor the extremity during and after activity for any change in size, shape, tissue, texture, soreness, heaviness or firmness. Contact your physician or physical therapist for any changes you see.
  • Maintain good nail care and take extra care of cuticles. Avoid nail salons.
  • Protect exposed skin with sunscreen and insect repellent.
  • Carefully use razors or use an electric razor to reduce nicks and skin irritation.
  • Consider wearing a well-fitting compression garment to reduce swelling when traveling by air.
  • Stay physically active.
  • Take frequent rest periods during activity to allow for limb recovery. Gradually build up the duration and intensity of any activity or exercise by doing more reps and fewer weights.
