Asthma Sufferers Needed for Clinical Study

February 5, 2010

Do you have a child or loved one that suffers from asthma?  If so, Dr. Goutam P. Shome, an allergy, asthma and immunology specialist with Covenant Medical Group, would like to invite them to participate in a free clinical study sponsored by Covenant Health System.

Asthma is a chronic lung disease that affects more than 22 million Americans according to the American Academy of Allergy and Asthma and Immunology (AAAAI).  Asthma is the most common chronic childhood disease, affecting nearly five million children in the United States according to the AAAAI.

Dr. Shome said poor asthma control is associated with unscheduled doctor’s office visits, emergency room visits, hospitalization and can even lead to death among asthma sufferers.

“Through this study, we will be able to identify what sort of education and interventions make a difference in participants from this community thus improving the overall health of our asthma sufferers,” Dr. Shome said.

Participants will be required to make a certain number of visits to Dr. Shome’s office.  Each participant will be interviewed by a certified respiratory therapist regarding asthma control, asthma understanding, correct use of peak-flow-meter and missed school or work days.

Participants will also be given hands on demonstrations regarding common asthma medications and devices.  Each patient will be evaluated for asthma related quality of life (ARQL) in addition to measurement of lung function.

A total of four visits, at a three-month interval, will be required.  Dr. Shome believes the year-long study will ultimately improve asthma control, the quality of life, and both improve and stabilize lung function of participants.

In order to participate in the clinical study, you must be at least 6 years of age.  If you are interested in taking part in the study, call 806.725.8420.
