4th of July Safety Tips

July 2, 2010

Every July 4, thousands of children and teens are injured using consumer fireworks.  Approximately 12,000 people are treated for fireworks injuries each year. Covenant Health System would like to provide tips on how to be safe and prevent firework injuries this Fourth of July holiday.

  • Always use fireworks outside and have a bucket of water and a water hose nearby in case of an accident
  • Use fireworks on hard, flat, level surfaces, not on grass or gravel; always use fireworks in a clear open area
  • Never put your head or any part of your body over the top of any firework product at any time
  • Safety glasses are recommended for individuals lighting fireworks and for individuals in close proximity to the fireworks
  • Do not consume alcohol while handling fireworks
  • If a child is injured by fireworks, immediately call 911 or go to the Covenant Children’s Emergency Room
  • If an eye injury occurs, do not flush the eye out with water or attempt to put any ointment on it
  • Do not rub the eye as this may cause more damage; cover the eye with a rigid shield without pressure (a paper cup can be used)
  • If a child receives a burn, remove clothing from the burned area and run cool water over the burned area
  • The safest way to enjoy fireworks is to attend a public display conducted by trained professionals

Fireworks are exciting, fun and spectacular but they can be dangerous at the same time. Use some of these safety tips and have a wonderful holiday weekend.
